Die U-87 Cyber Combat Unit ist der Vorgänger der zylonischen Rasse, hergstellt etwa 58 Jahre vor dem Fall der Zwölf Kolonien von Daniel Graystone und Graystone Industries. Sie gehören später zu einen der mehreren Zylonenmodelle, die sich im Zylonenkrieg gegen ihre Schöpfer wenden.
Erstellung
Der U-87-Kampfroboter wird in der Zeit unmittelbar vor dem Ersten Zylonenkrieg von Daniel Graystone und seinem Team von Wissenschaftlern in Graystone Industries in Caprica City erstellt. Im Auftrag der Regierung von Caprica soll der U-87 als Soldat auf dem Schlachtfeld dienen und in der Lage sein zu "Schießen und Kämpfen." Als eine Abweichung des Einfachen Dienerroboter, der zur Zeit verfügbar ist, wird der U-87 dafür entworfen, eine humanoide Form zu haben (Caprica Pilotfilm, "Unvanquished").
Inspiration
Ob absichtlich oder unabsichtlich, hat Daniel Graystones Entwurf für das U-87-Gehäuse eine verblüffende Ähnlichkeit mit Zeichnungen seiner Tochter, die sie als Kind gezeichnet hatte. Zoes Entwurf gekennzeichnet deutlich gegliederten Beine, ein künstliches Gehirn in der Brust, anstatt im Kopf und ein einziges, rot-glühendes Auge (Things We Lock Away).
Forschung & Entwicklung
Nach der Herstellung des Prototypengehäuses und dem Erwerb eines militärischen Vertrags mit Capricas Verteidigungsministerium, steht die Entwicklung mit dem U-87 Projekt. Bis dahin ist das Projekt eine halbe Milliarde Cubits über dem Budget und fünf Jahren über dem Zeitplan. Während die Erstellung des Prototypengehäuses selbst eine einfache Aufgabe ist, ist die Schaffung einer funktionierenden künstlichen Intelligenz, die den Körper beherrschen soll, eine andere Sache.
Die Tests des U-87 schließen mindestens 42 Auswertungsprotokolle ein, in denen der Roboter, innerhalb von Graystones Laboren, in eine simulierte Schlachtfeldumgebung gestellt wird. Getestet auf seine Fähigkeit, selbständig Ziele zu identifizieren und zu treffen und einen Konflikt selbstständig zu lösen und zu führen, verfehlt die Kampfeinheit konsequent die Erwartungen.
Mit den Medien, die die Verzögerungen und Kostenüberschreitungen hochspielen, beginnt Capricas Premierminister, Druck auf Graystone Industries auszuüben, während er schon daran denkt, das Projekt an Graystones Konkurrenten abzugeben (Caprica Pilotfilm).
Der MCP
Ein wichtiger wissenschaftlicher Durchbruch tritt auf, als Graystone Industries Konkurrent, Tomas Vergis, Gründer und CEO der Vergis Corporation von Tauron, mit der Entwicklung des metakognitiven Prozessors oder MCP-Chips, das Problem der künstliche Intelligenz knackt. Während man von der Vergis Corporation annahm, dass sie im Bereich der Robotik Jahre hinter Graystone Industries seien, bringt die Schaffung des MCP sie ins Spiel für Capricas Vertrag mit den Kampfeinheiten, obwohl von einer anderen Welt.
Als Daniel Graystone mit dieser beruflichen Herausforderung konfrontiert wird, erleidet er auch eine persönliche Tragödie, da Zoe Graystone bei einem Bombombenanschlag auf Zug 23 in Caprica City ums Leben kommt. Schockiert davon, dass Zoe eine identische Kopie von sich selbst innerhalb der virtuellen Welt erstellte, kommt Daniel bald zu der Erkenntnis, dass er theoretisch seine Tochter wieder zum Leben bringen könnte, indem er den Avatar in einen Roboterkörper verpflanzt. Um diese Auferstehung zu ermöglichen braucht Daniel aber den metakognitiven Prozessor (Caprica Pilotfilm).
Durch Joseph Adama - einem Anwalt mit Verbindungen zum Ha'la'tha-Verbrechersyndikat - arrangiert Daniel den Diebstahl des MCP von der Vergis Corporation auf Tauron. Ohne dass Daniel es weiß, führt der Diebstahl zum Tod von zwei Männern. Dies ist ein Verlust, für den Tomas Vergis selbst bald Vergeltung suchen würde (Know Thy Enemy).
Kybernetische Lebensform
Nach dem Erhalt des MCP arbeitet Daniel unermüdlich daran, seine den Avatar seiner Tochter aus der virtuellen Welt in die physische zu bringen. Er lädt das Programm in den MCP und dann implantiert Daniel den Chip in das Gehäuse des U-87. Zunächst erscheint es, als ob die Integration erfolgreiche gewesen wäre. Der U-87 macht einen Schritt in Richtung Daniel und spricht ein Wort: Daddy. Doch der Datenstrom innerhalb des Prozessors destabilisiert und führt zu einem katastrophalen Datenverlust und der scheinbaren Löschung des Zoe-Avatars.
Von Trauer befallen, findet Daniel wenig Trost darin, dass der U-87 endlich beginnt, effizient zu operieren und während während einer Demonstration für Capricas Verteidigungsministerin Joan Leyte die Erwartungen aller übertrifft.
Da der Vertrag für die Kampfeinheiten nun für Graystone Industries gesichert ist, gibt Daniel Graystone dem Projekt U-87 einen Namen: Eine "kybernetische Lebensform." Kurz "Zylon" (Caprica Pilotfilm).
